Monday Trailer: Coven

For my first Monday Trailer post in quite some time I have something a little different; the 6th teaser trailer for the third season of American Horror Story, Coven.

American Horror Story: Coven

For anyone unfamiliar with the show, American Horror Story has taken on a peculiar format whereby each season tells a completely fresh story in a new area, a new time period and with new characters but many of the same actors. In the build up to the shows second season, Asylum, the marketing team really stepped things up and produced an extensive collection of brief teasers featuring disturbing and thematically relevant images. They've kept things up and have been delivering another series in preparation for Coven, which will begin airing on October 9th in the US. This series focuses on a New Orleans home for special girls which is home to a coven of witches, if the title hadn't clued you in, and reunites the series power-pair of Jessica Lange and Evan Peters with season one returnee Taissa Farmiga and season two heavy-hitter Sarah Paulson, as well as newcomers Gabourey Sibide, Kathy Bates and (sigh!) Emma Roberts.

What separates this 6th teaser for Coven from those before it, and indeed those of season two, is that it plays out much like a regular trailer, featuring the shows actual actors and depicting a sequence extremely close to the synopsis of this season. At 30 seconds the trailer is around three times longer than the teasers before it and features a sample Lauren O'Connell's stunningly eery cover of House of the Rising Sun. The teaser retains the extremely stylised aesthetic of its predecessors, however I am hopeful that the inclusion of a narrative and the shows actors means that this trailer is indicative of how the actual series will look. While the teasers for Asylum were brilliant and effective, much of the stronger images that were present in them were never realised within the final show. If I am right and this trailer resembles the season in any way then it is certain to be the most stylish of the series run.

Are you excited for the new series?

  1. I've been following AHS since the first episode. I can't wait for the new season. I'm(pathetically?) up to date on every detail of the 3rd season!

    1. It's such a good series that has definitely filled in the gap in the market for horror on TV.
I'm finding it incredibly hard to keep myself spoiler-free as I found stuff out about the last season that made the story less exciting.
I can't wait for this to start though!
